Anjanaharibe-Sud Special Reserve *

The Anjanaharibe-Sud Special Reserve is located in northeastern Madagascar about 15 km south of Andapa. Among the diurnal lemurs one can expect to see there are the white-fronted brown lemur (Eulemur albifrons), particularly in the forests of Befingotra, the silky sifaka (Propithecus candidus), and a population of black indri (Indri indri). However, it requires a good two- to four-hour hike into the reserve to reach areas where the latter two species are likely to be seen. Anjanaharibe-Sud is also thus far the only place where one can see two newly-described nocturnal forms, Mittermeier’s mouse lemur (Microcebus mittermeieri) and Seal’s sportive lemur (Lepilemur seali). Other species that may be seen in the reserve include hairy-eared dwarf lemur (Allocebus trichotis), greater dwarf lemur (Cheirogaleus major), northern bamboo lemur (Hapalemur occidentalis), red-bellied lemur (Eulemur rubriventer), eastern woolly lemur (Avahi laniger), and aye-aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis). Visits can be arranged through Antananarivo-based tour operators, and useful information can be obtained through the website http://www.marojejy.com .
