Andrafiamena

The Andrafiamena sandstone ridge is located between the Ankarana and Analamerana protected areas, two hours’ drive from Diégo-Suarez. The Ampatsona Forest in Andrafiamena is home to a population of the Critically Endangered Perrier’s sifaka (Propithecus perrieri); however, if one wants to see this species in the wild for the first time, it is easier to do so in Analamerana. Other species to be found in the Andrafiamena ridge forest include Tavaratra mouse lemur (Microcebus tavaratra), northern bamboo lemur (Hapalemur occidentalis), crowned lemur (Eulemur coronatus), Sanford’s brown lemur (Eulemur sanfordi), and aye-aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis). Both the Ankarana sportive lemur (Lepilemur ankaranensis) and Daraina sportive lemur (Lepilemur milanoii) are apparently sympatric as well, but differentiating the two in the field is difficult. The best access is from Anjakely village, along 12 km of four-wheel-drive road south of Marotaolana (4 km southwest of the town of Anivorano-Nord). Association Fanamby is working to establish formal protected areas in the Andrafiamena forests, and neighboring Ambohipiraka-Andavakoera forest.
